Promoting Rule of Law and Reconciliation in Post- Conflict Syria - Legal Education for a Human Rights-Based Corps of Legal Professionals
The project aims to contribute to create career opportunities for aspiring Syrian lawyers and provide them with skills so that they can participate in reconstruction of their country. In 2017, the RWI, established formal agreements with the Beirut Arab University (BAU)1 in Lebanon and Jordan University in Ammanto establish institutes that will allow young Syrian law students to obtain or finalize a graduate or post-graduate degree in Syrian law while in exile.
RWI also successfully launched a regional multi-partner platform for sharing of experience and transfer of knowledge in the areas of legal and human rights educational. In order to ensure that the project is responding to needs of young Syrians, RWI reached out to the Syrian student communities in Lebanon and Jordan, to obtain information on their aspirations, challenges, needs and outlook on the future. The information was captured in a Needs and Baseline Analysis. The analysis informed the development of a Gender Strategy, which guided the design and nature of the work, and will continue to guide the implementation of this project going forward, to enhance opportunities for Syrians outside Syria to obtain a higher education in Syrian law.
